A father of Asian descent who slit his son’s throat after returning from a drug rehabilitation trip now faces life in prison and deportation, following a ruling by the High Criminal Court.

Judges have fixed 27 April for final arguments in the appeal, after the 63-year-old was convicted of murder with intent. The killing took place inside the shared workers’ residence where the father lived with his 34-year-old son.

Prosecutors said he tied the younger man’s hands and feet using bits of cloth, then used a knife to cut across his neck several times, severing the flesh down to the spine.

The forensic pathologist confirmed the wounds were deep and deliberate, noting also bruising around the wrists and forearms, likely caused by soft restraints.

Injuries

The knife seized from the scene matched the injuries.

Witnesses described how the father had earlier confided that his son was hooked on drugs back home.

He had placed him in a hospital to try and sort him out, and later brought him to Bahrain in the hope he could work and straighten up. But things quickly took a turn.

The son was said to be short-tempered, foul-mouthed, and violent towards his father.

Shouting

On the day of the killing, one witness said he heard shouting from inside the house and decided to go out for breakfast to avoid trouble.

When he came back, he found the father on the staircase, blood on his clothes.

The man told him, without hesitation, that he had killed his son.

Another witness, who works at a cold store, recalled how the father and son had stopped by two weeks earlier.

The son, he said, was shouting for no clear reason and grabbing at his father’s clothes.

Witness

On the morning of the killing, the father called this same witness, asking for the police number, and later rang again to ask that police be sent to his address.

He turned up at the cold store later, gave the address to police, and admitted he’d hit his son.

When officers got to the house, they found the son dead on the floor with deep cuts across his neck and the knife nearby.

A police officer told the court that the father had called in the incident himself.

Blood

When they arrived, he was still dressed in traditional Asian clothing, stained with blood.
