Urgent repairs to fire systems, wiring and sewage covers are needed at Manama Central Market, councillors warned during a site visit yesterday aimed at tackling long-standing safety concerns.
The Capital Trustees Board visited the site to examine conditions first hand and speak directly with stallholders.
Board Chairman Engineer Tarada led the delegation, accompanied by Vice-Chairwoman Kholood Al Qattan, Services Committee Chairwoman Huda Sultan, members Mohammed Tawfiq Al Abbas and Fatima Haji, and municipal staff.
Vendors raised complaints about poor hygiene and weak air conditioning. Trustees walked through the market, noted the issues and observed the state of the premises for themselves.
Cleanliness and basic upkeep, they said, need to be improved for the sake of both shoppers and tenants. But safety drew the sharpest concern.
Co uncillors pointed to faulty wiring, broken fire alarms, cracked drain covers and signs of structural wear. They said these issues would be passed to the relevant departments for immediate attention.
