Labour Ministry inspectors have ramped up checks on worker accommodations to enforce rules on space, safety, and hygiene—particularly in overcrowded rooms housing more than eight people.
Minimum space
The focus is on minimum space requirement per person and buildings that lack basic safety standards.
During inspections, officials are distributing leaflets to remind employers of their obligations—covering everything from room size and occupancy limits to general upkeep and safety conditions.
The Ministry is also stressing the need for regular maintenance, with urgent repairs, especially to electrical wiring and power boxes, to be carried out immediately. Employers must also notify the Ministry of worker housing locations, install fire alarms and extinguishers, and secure a Civil Defence fire safety certificate.
Each site must also have a first-aid kit sized to match the number of residents.
