Man admits killing neighbour

A man accused of stabbing his neighbour to death in Al Shakhura stood frozen behind the glass barrier in court before finally admitting the killing.

For a few moments, the defendant said n o t h i n g. H i s e y e s d r o p p e d to the floor, then flicked up towards the judges, before drifting across the courtroom.

The charge of premeditated murder was read to him. Still, he stayed silent.

When the charge was repeated, the inner battle ended.

“Yes,” he said.

His lawyer asked the court for a copy of the case file and explained that the defendant had been under psychiatric care at the time of his arrest.

He said his client had a medical record and had been receiving treatment but had stopped taking his medication five days before the attack.

He called for the defendant to be returned to a psychiatric hospital for his own safety and that of others Lawyer Abdul rahman Ghunaim, acting for the victim’s family, filed a civil claim, demanding damages for the loss of their sole breadwinner.

He also requested a copy of the case file.
