Cops launch manhunt to nab man accused of rape

A manhunt has been launched to capture a Bahrain Defence Force (BDF) soldier who allegedly assaulted and attempted to rape a Filipina in the desert last week.

DT News had reported earlier this week that the Filipina was trapped by a male friend into attending a National Day celebration event in Sakhir camping area after being promised that an old mutual friend from Saudi Arabia would also be attending.

At the camp, the woman was allegedly assaulted, as she was left alone with the assailant, who was under the influence of alcohol and tried to rape her.

According to her, she fought the man who brutally beat her up, causing several injuries to her body. This continued until two of the man's friends finally interfered and pulled him away from her.

They dropped her back home while she was still bleeding. They refused to take her to a hospital despite requesting several times.

She was also prevented from making any phone calls from her mobile phone and was threatened to be killed by the attacker.

The police has been unable to track down the accused until now since the victim has not been able to provide sufficient information about him.

Police authorities stated that information such as his full name, residency address, CPR number or vehicle's registration plate number should be provided to detect him.

Multiple attempts were made by the police to phone the accused, who never answered any of the calls. However he continuously attempted to reach the victim, who rejected his calls and messages.

A few days after reporting the case, the address of the attacker was provided to the police, who promised that they would initiate legal procedures in this regard, and arrest the man, if required.

This came after the victim filed another case of harassment, as the assailant kept calling her day and night. She informed that “he even impersonated a policeman, after he called her up from an unknown number".

“I don't know what he wants from me. I'm alone here in Bahrain with no family members to support or protect me. He knows where I work and knows the area where I live. I'm afraid he would try to harm me, especially since he knows that I'm taking legal procedures against him for attempting to rape and physically assaulting me,“ the 29-year-old Filipina told DT News.

The Philippines Embassy contacted DT News after reading the news and requested for details of the victim.

The woman was asked to attend an interview at the embassy the next day. There she was assured by a senior diplomat that the embassy would leave no stone unturned in assisting her case.

The official said that the embassy would coordinate with the Interior Ministry, Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Ministry and the Ministry of Defence Affairs regarding the case.

The embassy also confirmed that specialised attorneys would be appointed to take up the case upon the victim's request.

The woman expressed her concern regarding her safety since the accused was still at large.

She was then offered shelter by the embassy and several rights organisations. However she politely rejected because didn't want her work or personal life to be affected. She only wanted to be ensured that the assailant would not harass her.

Additionally, embassy officials visited the police station to follow up the case and updated the victim on her rights and obligations in this regard.
