First Bahraini woman municipal councillor passes away
The first Bahraini woman to have won the position of a municipal councillor in the Kingdom passed away yesterday.
Former Muharraq Municipal Council Member Fatima Salman was mourned and buried in Muharraq Cemetery yesterday. The funeral was attended by HH Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman Al Khalifa, Muharraq Governorate Governor Salman Binhindi, a number of MPs and councillors and hundreds of citizens.
The deceased was the first woman to win a seat at a municipal council in the Kingdom during the parliamentary and municipal elections of 2010, representing the second constituency of Muharraq.
She was also known as a social activist and a pioneer in voluntary work during the past three decades.
When she won the elections five years ago, she was greeted by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, who wrote to her saying, “Your victory proves the development achieved by Bahraini women.”
The deceased was mourned by the elite of Muharraq residents and councillors, who recalled her big roles in the municipal, voluntary and charity fields. Fatima Salman had been suffering from health-related problems during the past few months.
