Five get life term in explosion case
The High Criminal Courts sentenced five defendants, implicated in triggering an explosive to kill police officers in Muharraq, to life in prison.
One of the defendants was handed down an extra month in jail plus a fine of BD100 for possessing a sword.
The Bahrainis, aged between 20 and 40, have reportedly placed the bomb in Shaikh Khalifa Al Kabeer Avenue, but no one was injured though the bomb went off.
Another explosive was also found at the scene, but experts later declared it as a replica, according to court documents.
The first defendant told prosecutors earlier that he was contacted by one of the fugitives, who has been living in Iran for five years.
He requested him to place a bomb near the Bahrain International Airport, as “detonating it will cause panic among citizens and residents and would make negative impact on the local economy,” according to his statement.
The bomb as well as the fake explosive was initially kept near a mosque in Sanad, from where the first defendant was asked to collect them.
Prosecutors said that the defendants had also aimed to murder police officers by their terrorist act.
