Ex-colonel gets jail for conning

An ex-colonel in the intelligence will spend three years behind bars for embezzling BD2 million from two investors, who were searching for a land plot to establish a shopping mall. A real estate agent showed them a plot and told that it was owned by the ex-colonel.

But after completing the deal, the duo found that the land plot was mortgaged and the defendant wasn’t the owner of it.

“When we called him up to buy the land, he welcomed us. He provided us with documents confirming his ownership to the land. He demanded BD2 million to complete the deal,” one of the investors told prosecutors.

“We gave him several cheques, and he requested us to add a local bank name as the beneficiary of the cheques. It was odd, but we agreed to conclude the deal,” he added. “When we completed the amount, we went to him to the notary to switch the ownership of the land. But the procedure collapsed.”

“We started communicating with him to hand over the contract, but he was ignoring our calls. Later,  we found that he wasn’t the owner of the land,” the investor added.

Two other men have also stood trial in connection with the case for helping the ex-colonel to dupe the investors, and they were also sentenced to three years in prison.
