Another Urdu poetry wave to hit Bahrain this Friday
Urdu poetry lovers in Bahrain can now look forward to a special literary treat this Friday - an International Mushaira (international symposium of Urdu poetry) – at 8pm at the Al Riffa Ballroom, Regency InterContinental Hotel.
It is being organised by Al-Saqafa, The Pakistan Association, under the patronage of Pakistan Embassy in Bahrain. The event will complement Bahrain’s National Day celebrations carrying over from last month.
Pakistan Ambassador to Bahrain Mohammed Saeed Khan will be the chief guest.
The Urdu Mushaira titled ‘Ahang-e-Barlas’ will be dedicated to the renowned poet from Pakistan, Murtaza Barlas. It will pay a living tribute to his celebrated lifetime achievements as an intellectual and a poet.
The Mushaira will be presided over by noted Pakistani scholar and Urdu poet Professor Pirzada Qasim, Chancellor, Ziauddin University, Karachi.
“Barlas is recognised as one of the greatest Urdu poets of his time by way of his individuality and highly acclaimed poetic works widely published over half a century,” said Al Saqafa Chairman Altaf Azim.
Five collections of his poetic works have been published of late with Ghazals being their crowning jewels. Sixth collection of his poetry, ‘Sahar Chasheedah’ published recently, will be officially launched at the event on Friday.
Barlas’s poetic style comprises strong expressions and authority and command of Urdu language.
Despite being candidly critical of the social ills and disparity, his writing is always objective and in perpetual hope for a brighter future. His artistry over the use of well-placed similes and metaphors clearly sets him apart from his contemporaries and predecessors.
“Words miserably fall short in describing Murtaza Barlas as a poet like none other. Only a serious study of Barlas’s works may unravel his unparalleled art,” said Al Saqafa Board Member and chief architect of the event Ahmed Adil.
Born in 1934 and brought up in an educated art-loving family, Barlas launched his professional career with the Civil Services of Pakistan in 1960.
Having served for many decades in high-ranking government positions he finally retired in the mid 90s. He now lives in Lahore, Pakistan and devotes his time to his family, social work and literary interests.
The shining array of other internationally-acclaimed poets that awaits an equally enthusiastic Urdu-loving audience include: Zahid Fakhri, Abbas Tabish, Mansoor Usmani, Shakeel Jazib, Hameeda Shaheen, Afzal Khan, Suhail Saqib, Khalid Sajjad, Qamar Riaz, Suleman Jazib and Tabish Zaidi.
Entrance to the Mushaira is free and by invitation. Children under 10 will not be admitted. A large number of invitation cards are already in circulation. Those interested may expect to receive them either through their friends, or may directly request by calling the organisers on: 39666279, 39407231, 39656135.
