Illegal car show in Bahrain turns tragic
The weekly meeting of car stuntmen in Naurana Island in Bahrain on Friday has been a horrible one this week, as a bystander was severely injured when a car hit him, while another car turned into ashes as it was caught up in flames.
As shown in two amateur videos that were shot from different angles at the site, a spectator was seen flaying away for at least 10 metres when one of the drivers who were performing car stunts lost control of the vehicle and rammed into him.
Sources confirmed that the injured suffered multiple injuries and was rushed to the nearby Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmed Al Sabah Health Centre and then transferred to Salmaniya Medical Complex Accident and Emergency, where he was kept under monitoring.
Police later confirmed that the driver was arrested. “The driver of the vehicle that hit a man during an illegal show in Karranah was arrested,” said Traffic General Director Shaikh Nasser bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa, who added that “legal procedures are underway.”
Another vehicle caught on fire while being revved to the maximum by another driver. The driver escaped the burning car, while another driver with a four-by-four vehicle towed it into the shallow waters, leaving it as a piece of metal in the middle sea.
As reported earlier on DT News, groups of local youth gather every weekend in the abandoned Naurana Island project near Karranah village in the northern parts of the country. The island is empty only for strips of asphalt where the young drivers perform their stunts and challenge each other, starting from late afternoon until sunset. Similar accidents, including deaths, have been reported on the island during the past few years.
