Asian man accused of smuggling acquitted

An Asian national who allegedly attempted to smuggle 120 grams of marijuana into Bahrain by stashing it in his slippers has been acquitted due to lack of evidence.

The accused was arrested at the Bahrain International Airport. Officers found that he was carrying slippers in a bag, and the marijuana was hidden in them.

During interrogation, he admitted to carrying the slippers, but denied he was aware about the illegal substances stashed inside them.

He said that a man in his country gave him the slippers, and revealed to police officers that person’s name, mobile number and the company he was serving in.

The High Criminal Court stated in the acquittal verdict that there was no evidence that showed the man was aware that he was committing a crime.

“No evidence has been provided to confirm his knowledge about the marijuana stashed in the slippers, thus the court sees absence in criminal intent with his act,” the verdict read.
