Court rejects hospital staff’s petition

former private hospital receptionist was sent to jail yesterday after she lost her appeal in an embezzlement case.

The receptionist was earlier handed down three months behind bars for pocketing BD5,000 from her employer.

The defendant had been assigned to coordinate doctors’ appointments in the hospital.

She, however, began embezzling appointment fees by cancelling them after making patients pay the amounts.

She was caught after one of her colleagues, who was on duty in her absence, found the infringements.

“A patient came to me and said that he had an appointment. I told him that it was cancelled. But he queried how it happened as he had already paid,” the woman told prosecutors.

“Then I reviewed several appointments and I found that she had cancelled so many appointments. But she had already received the money from the patients,” the colleague added.
