MP denies fund sanction for cricket stadiums

Manama

A Parliamentarian has denied the rumours related to construction of new cricket stadiums in the Kingdom yesterday.

Social media was abuzz with rumours that BD10 million had been allocated for the construction of cricket stadiums in Bahrain.

Many citizens criticised the decision on social media, for ‘allotting’ fund for cricket stadiums and cutting subsidy on meat and other vital consume bales, in a clear note to the Government’s controversy in solving the current deficit in the state budget and cut cost resolutions.

Some of the social media users posted cartoons, claiming that the authorities were promoting a sport, which is less popular in the Kingdom.

The cyber campaign followed articles written by two of the main national columnists and was published yesterday in a local newspaper.

Commenting on the issue, MP Ahmed Qarata said that the government had so far not allocated any fund for cricket stadium. “The Parliamentarians will definitely come to know when any such decision is taken by the government,” he said.

Qarata earlier said that Bahrain definitely needed more sports, especially cricket. He had said that he along with  five other MPs was  going to submit a proposal before the Parliament that a cricket stadium be made in the Kingdom since there is a national cricket team, which represents the country in different international tourneys regularly.

He had also opined that cricket tournaments could have a positive impact on the economy of Bahrain, as it boosts the confidence of the investors.
