Accused of 'beating girl to death', man jailed for 3 years

A man, who was accused of killing a teenage girl, has been sentenced to three years in jail.

The 26-year-old man had beaten up the 18-year-old girl to death on their first date. The girl, who is said to have been suffering from cardiac problems, died after he reportedly hit her on the chest.

However, the convict claimed that he “was only joking with her when he smacked on her chest.”

The man was referred to a criminal court on charges of beating up the teenager to death.  “We boarded a bus together after meeting at a bus station and sat talking to each other. It then developed into a banter and we began beating up each other in a good-humoured way,” the defendant told the prosecutors.

The woman reportedly collapsed to the ground and some of the fellow passengers tried to give her first aid.

Though the accused pretended that he didn’t know the girl, he later offered to take her to hospital. However, the girl was declared dead on reaching the hospital.

The police nabbed the man with the help of a witness, who spotted him with the girl in the bus station. The teenager’s family confirmed that she was having heart problems and the doctors suspected that her death was linked to the ailment.

The defendant was charged in connection with causing her death. He was also fined BD50 for his crime by the High Criminal Court.
