Vandalism: Minors detained

Manama : Authorities have interrogated and detained four children who had stormed into a public school in the capital and burnt the flag of the Kingdom.

First Attorney at the Public Prosecution Abdulrahman Al Sayed said that the children were aged between 9 and 14.

The minors entered the school during the first week of this month by climbing the walls of the school. Besides burning the flag, they also vandalised some of the school property.

The incident was reported at Al Alaa Al Hadhrami Elementary Boys’ School in Seqaya area, opposite to Salmaniya Medical Complex.

Initial reports claimed that  six children were involved in the attack.

Al Sayed stated yesterday that investigations resulted in identifying one suspect, who led the authorities to the remaining three.

He said that the minors were accused in the interrogation of rioting, arson, vandalism and trespassing.

They were all referred to the Juveniles Court, which ordered to detain them at the Juveniles Care Centre, while investigations continue.

Al Sayed said the involvement of minors in such criminal activities is due to lack of moral guidance, discipline, education and awareness provided to these children.

“It’s essential to raise children well, protect them from falling prey to crime and to safeguard their future. Parents should be aware that they will be held accountable for their children’s illegal acts,” Al Sayed added.

DT News reported earlier this month that the police swiftly arrested the minors. Capital Governorate Police Director General Major General Naji Al Hashil confirmed back then that the parents were summoned and the Juvenile Public Prosecution was
notified.

Quoting the Law, Al Hashil said in a statement that parents would be either fined not more than BD2000 and/or would face jail terms not less than one year if they fail to monitor their children who are engaging in illegal activities.

The General Director also stressed that parents are responsible for protecting their children from incitement and preventing them from engaging in illegal activities.
