Bahrain celebrates United Nations 70th anniversary

Manama  : Thanks to the great care and attention of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Bahrain’s special relationship with the United Nations (UN)  have resulted in building bridges of cooperation and lasting relationships, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, yesterday. 

He was addressing the  inaugural ceremony held to  launch a documentary on “The United Nations and Bahrain: An Enduring Partnership.”

The event was organised by Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at Shaikh Isa Cultural Centre, to mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of UN and its partnership with
Bahrain.

Shaikh Khalid stressed that cooperation between Bahrain and UN is not fortuitous, but dates back to several decades, where Bahrain has sought to join the organisation’s strategic role in consolidating international peace and security.

The Foreign Minister, on the occasion, also noted that the Kingdom’s commitment to noble goals established by the UN, was among the most important factors that had helped it to strengthen the relationship between the two sides.  

Shaikh Khalid further expressed Bahrain’s aspiration to work closely with the UN bodies and specialised agencies.

The Foreign Minister also  affirmed he is confident that the future would witness remarkable development in the relationship between the Kingdom and
the UN.

Expressing deep appreciation to Bahrain Telecommunications Company  “Batelco” for their support in the making the documentary a reality, Shaikh Khalid said that their help gives us a glimpse into the interests of Bahraini people in promoting Kingdom’s relations with the UN activities. 

For his part, The Resident Representative of UNDP in Bahrain, Peter Grohmann, commended the level of cooperation between Bahrain and the UN in various fields, while stressing his keenness to continuously enhance the cooperation and open up new areas beneficial to both sides.

The documentary highlighted the relationship between Bahrain and  United Nations, detailing how it originated, what are its characteristics and the stages it went through.

An exhibition of photographs documenting the history Bahrain and its achievements in the United Nations was also exhibited at the end of the ceremony.
