Death of woman, foetus: Female docs sentenced

The Lower Criminal Court sentenced five female doctors serving at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) to one year each in prison for medical misconduct, leading to the death of a woman and her baby.

A probe revealed that the five, including three Asians and two Bahrainis, were responsible for the deaths.

According to court files, the woman’s foetus moved inside the placenta and the doctors at SMC initially suggested a caesarean delivery.

The victim was a sickle cell patient, and her husband decided to seek a second opinion in a private hospital.

However, he returned to the SMC, and the doctors, this time, decided to carry out a normal delivery.

“The foetus died after doctors failed to take it out of my wife’s body. Later my wife died in the ICU,” the husband told prosecutors.

The probe report underlined that the five doctors committed misconduct during their practice in the woman’s case.

Their sentence, however, was suspended for three years, which means they won’t be sent to jail unless they commit a similar misconduct during this period.
