Adjusted electricity, water prices to take effect on March 1

Manama : The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) will start applying the new electricity and water tariff as form March 1. Prices will change for the industrial and commercial sectors, as well as expatriates, but will remain unchanged for the domestic consumption of Bahrainis for one account only.

Tariffs for Bahrainis with one account include several categories. They cover heads of Bahraini households (married, divorced, widower and single according to some conditions) provided that the subscriber's ID card address conforms with the one registered in EWA account, wives with accounts registered under their names (in case of polygamy), Bahraini women subscribers who are married to non-Bahrainis but have their EWA accounts and minors with a guardian or without a guardian in case there is a written consent from the Minors Funds Directorate.

Deputy CEO for Distribution and Customer Service at the Electricity and Water Authority Adan Mohammed Fakhro said citizens who want to adjust their personal information should report to the three customer service centres in Country Mall in Budaiya, Muharraq and Mazaya Building in Isa Town or contact the call centre on 17515555, noting that EWA is cooperating with the e-Government Authority to modify the day.

He asserted that the citizens should rectify their situation within three months in order to continue receiving electricity subsidies.

Regarding the other sectors, Bahrain is the second lowest GCC countries in electricity rates for industrial and commercial sectors, even after the prices are adjusted.

Earlier, the Minister of Energy Dr. Abdul Hussain bin Ali Mirza had asserted that increasing the rates would save EWA's conservation programmes, and bring the prices in line with other rates in the GCC.

The minister also said the fixed fees on the electricity and water services will be increased by on Bahrain Dinar monthly for all subscribers per account.

It is to be noted that the cabinet had endorsed a proposal by the Ministerial Committee for Financial Affairs and Rationalising Expenditure to adjust electricity and water consumption prices.
