‘Threatening’ part of domestic abuse: MPs

A group of parliamentarians are seeking to legally consider “threatening” as part of domestic violence.

“Threatening crimes are of no less harm than actual crimes, as it plants fear in victims, especially in domestic crimes. This could result in dangerous consequences, which require us to consider it within domestic violent crimes,” said the MPs.

This was announced as a group of five MPs, headed by Woman and Child Parliamentary Committee Head Roua Al Hayki, submitted a proposal to amend certain articles of Law 17 of the year 2015 on the protection from domestic violence.

She said the existing law contains a legislative gap in regards to classifying threatening as a crime, as it’s not mentioned or punishable.

Along with Al Hayki, MPs Jamal Dawood, Abdulmohsen Al Bakry, Fatima Al Asfoor and Anas Buhindi submitted the proposal to the council’s Speaker Ahmed Al Mulla.
