Expert warns of rise of PCOS in Mideast
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) has become very common among women in the Middle East, according to Senior Consultant Gynaecologist Dr. Dabeer Salaria.
Dr Salaria said it is more common in the Arabian region than in Europe and Western countries, and is spreading quickly.
He cited sedentary lifestyle as a major cause, besides hereditary inheritance. He added that diabetes and obesity could also higher the chances of developing PCOS.
PCOS, an infertility disorder, inhibits the production of fertile eggs. Irregular periods, blackening of skin near neck, acne, pimples, abnormal hair and miscarriages during pregnancies are some of the symptoms.
He said the syndrome is caused by a hormonal imbalance, when the ovary is enlarged and many cysts are produced.
Dr. Salaria blamed consumption of junk food as a major factor behind a number of disorders including PCOS, and stressed the importance of consuming healthy food.
“PCOS is completely treatable and therefore there is nothing to worry about. Consult a doctor immediately in case you find any symptoms,” he said.
He added that the golden rule to prevent such disorders is to maintain a healthy lifestyle and Body Mass Index.
He stressed PCOS could lead to emotional problems and get worse, and hence it is essential to contact a gynaecologist immediately.
Earlier, renowned IVF consultant Dr Saba Amal Baig had revealed to DT News that 80 per cent of the PCOS patients were overweight.
