19 Bahrain schools for Third Mini Olympics
Manama : Nineteen schools have signed up for the Third School Mini Olympics, which is due to take place from April 21 until May 5.
A total of 1,859 young athletes, making up 71 teams from different private schools from across the kingdom will compete 10 sports disiplines during this two-week event, to be held for the third successive year.
The third edition of the Mini Olympics is organized by the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) in cooperation with the Ministry of Education.
BOC projects unit director Lounes Madene said the this year will see a breakthrough in the total number of sports compared to last year’s six.
Competitions for this year include three team sports – football, basketball and volleyball, in addition to athletics, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon and running race.
Lounes said the committee is keen to have an improved version of the Mini Olympics this year after the tremendous success of last year’s edition, and in line with the directives of Majesty the King’s Personal Representative for Charity Work and Youth Affairs, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman and BOC president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
He stressed that importance of such events, whichaim to promote the concept of public health and creating a competitive sports environment among students, spreading knowledge and physical education among the younger generation as well as the principles of Olympic values and ideals.
The School Mini Olympics also looks to motivate them to practice sports activities and follow a healthy life style.
