Spoken English classes for low-income Indian workers

Manama : The Indian Ladies Association (ILA) in Bahrain, as part of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations, has once again offered the “Learn English” programme for Indian expat workers, who are unable to afford such training facilities.

The course, which will start by early April, will have duration of two months with two sessions per week. The programme will be mostly based on basic spoken English with a few lessons on personality development and grooming.

“The idea of repeating this course was brought about due to the tremendous success of similar courses held for the last 15 years. We were inundated with requests for more such courses for beginners as well as advanced level,” said ILA President Kamlesh Jain.

The programme aims to help expat workers acquire basic communication skills in English, which will enable them to interact better at their workplace as well as outside.

“The programme will also become handy in their day-to-day situations like filling up forms, making applications and writing letters,” according to the organisers.

The organisers revealed that in the last few years, young housewives, who found the course useful for communicating with their school-going children, have shown tremendous interest in the course.

The course structure and scheme of teaching will be finalised by qualified teachers, who have volunteered their service. This programme has been organised as one of ILA’s service projects and under the supervision of the Speak-Easy Sub-Committee coordinators Mariam George and Usha Govindan, the organisers said.

“It being a special year for ILA, we intend to have more interactive sessions added,” said the coordinators. “We expect the applicant to have at least a middle-school level education.” There will be a very nominal fee to cover the cost of stationery and other course materials, while participants will be presented with course certificates at the end of the programme.

The organisers added that there are only limited seats available as of now. Hence, interested candidates can send their application on Fax Number 17 740431.

Companies, which are interested in sending their employees as a group or to sponsor this project during ILA’s Diamond Jubilee year, may contact the Coordinators or ILA General Secretary on 39072883,” the organisers informed.
