Illegal expat cab drivers deported from Bahrain

Manama : Around 50 expats, who illegally worked as cabbies in the country, were deported during the past six months. Transportation and Telecommunication Minister Kamal Ahmed recently announced that 20 Bahrainis were also detected during the same period, while they publicly transported passengers in return of money without obtaining official permits.

“These procedures came within the official efforts to eliminate the illegal taxis phenomenon. The 50 non-Bahraini illegal taxi drivers were deported in coordination with the General Directorate of Traffic and other concerned authorities,” he informed.

According to the Minister, the authorities responded to a request by local cabbies and put up signs at Bahrain International Airport instructing to only use authorised public transport.

Minister Ahmed added that only Bahrainis are granted permits that allow them to work in public transportation and under certain regulations. The Minister’s statements will be discussed in detail during the next Parliament weekly meeting on Tuesday.
