Appeal of expat 'spit' robber rejected by Bahrain court

ManamaAn Ethiopian man, who used spitting as a means to rob civilians, has had his appeal rejected.

He was earlier jailed for three-and-a-half years, and ordered to be expelled from Bahrain. The defendant was expectorating on pedestrians in order to distract them before robbing their belongings that ranged between wallets, cash money and bags.

The police received a tip-off about his foul play, and undercover agents were deployed in Manama to look for him. He was eventually spotted attempting to rob a man carrying 3,200 Saudi riyals in his trouser pocket.

According to the court documents, officers reportedly saw him spitting on the pants of the victim, and then went closer to him to offer his apology.

He reportedly took out a tissue and wiped the spit while his hand was sneaking inside the man’s pocket where the wallet was kept.

However, he was arrested before he could escape. The defendant was charged with attacking an on-duty police officer, who tried to arrest him.
