Bahrain rejects BD3.5m fishermen’s port in Juffair

Manama : The government has recently rejected a request to construct a BD3.5 million fishermen’s port in the Capital to serve the areas of Juffair, Umm Al Hassam and Al Ghuraifa.

This came as the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry replied to queries of the area’s parliamentary representative MP Abdulrahman Bumjaid.

The Ministry, in its reply, stated that only 21 professional fishermen from the mentioned areas are registered with the Ministry, while pointing out that constructing facilities for amateur fishermen are not included in its responsibilities.

Further, the statement said that the fishermen of the area could be embraced in one of the 20 fishermen’s ports that are established in different parts of the island, explaining that there are more than 1,600 professional fishermen from different areas of Bahrain that are registered with the Ministry. A detailed reply will be presented by Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf in the upcoming parliament session on
Tuesday.

The Minister also mentioned in his reply that the Ministry is studying the expansion of the existing ports to accommodate the increasing numbers of fishermen, rather than constructing new ones.
