Insulting sister country: Man gets 2 years
Manama : The Lower Criminal Court has sentenced a stateless man to two years behind the bars for defaming a sister country and inciting the public against the regime.
Investigators found that a Twitter user appeared to be posting defamatory remarks on the social media. It was later revealed that the accused was handling the account, but during the interrogation he denied having any involvement with it.
During a raid, the police have recovered a detonator and several mobile phones from his residence.
The defendant was also fined BD2,100 for his crimes as he was found guilty of misusing telecommunication devices besides inciting the public against the regime as well as insulting a sister country online. The defendant had been living in Bahrain illegally.
