The country is witnessing a huge progress at universities in terms of quality of education, which transferred them to true partners in shaping our future, said Education Minister and Chairman of the Higher Education Council (HEC), Dr. Majid Al Nuaimi yesterday.

Addressing a gathering after opening the National Skills and Employability Summit 2015, organised by General Secretariat of the council in conjunction with the British Cultural Council and the Higher Education Academy in the United Kingdom (HEA), he said that the forum was being held to plan the restructuring of higher education in order to make graduates fit for the labour market.

Rasheed Al-Maraj, Governor of the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) lauded a survey conducted by the General Secretariat at the HEC to identify graduates' skills required by labour market, and considered it a quantum leap in dealing with competency required in future to boost economic progress.

Dr. Riyadh Yousif Hamza, Secretary-General of HEC, said that the Secretariat had contacted representatives of different sectors in order to keep updated on labour market innovations and aspirations of employers regarding graduates' skills.

Dr. Aysha Murad, Chief of Scientific Research Development at MoE, said that the HEC was trying to align the outcome of the higher education with labour market. “Employers often complain that the graduates do not meet their expectations. The summit has been organised to focus on this core issue, keeping in mind the Economic Vision 2030,” she said.

Representatives of 14 sectors took part in the forum, which featured numerous workshops and panel discussions on altering curricula and teaching plans at universities to focus on skills and training required for labour market.
