Asst. Undersecretary for Hospitals Dr. Waleed Khalifa AlManea said that there were four or five fields in the health sector, which they could consider for better cooperation with Pakistan like sending their physicians to that country for fellowship training and for the residency programmes.

Commending on the Pakistan delegation’s visit to Bahrain, he said: “They had raised awareness about their services, especially about the training opportunities in Pakistan’s internationally recognized medical colleges.”

Dr Waleed said that getting local consultants as well as visiting doctors from Pakistan was the other areas they were considering about.

Pakistani delegation comprising of President College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) Professor Zafarullah Chaudhry, Prof. M. Shoaib Shafi, Prof. Amer Zaman Khan and GM CPSP, Ansar Ahmed were on a one-day visit to Bahrain.

They had meetings with high officials in King Hamad University Hospital, Ministry of Health and National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) in the presence of the Ambassador of Pakistan, Muhammad Saeed Khan.

Speaking to the DT News, Dr Zafarullah said that there was an issue of the recognition of Pakistani consultants in Bahrain and they had tried to convince that the Pakistani qualified doctors were one of the best doctors.

Dr Zafar said, “Bahrainis were not fully aware of the systems of Pakistan’s health sector. Now when they have learned about our systems, they are very much interested and want us to start the residency programmes.”

Prof. Shoaib said that the purpose of their visit was to ensure that Pakistani doctors qualified from CPSP must get the consultant status in Bahrain. “As far as their degree is concerned Pakistan is included in the top seven countries of the world.”

He said that Saudi Arabia was already giving Pakistani doctors the consultant status and NHRA had also ensured them that Bahrain would do the same.

He said that Bahrain had shown interest in sending their doctors to Pakistani hospitals for postgraduate training.  “In the meetings, it was also decided that the doctors of Pakistan should complete a part of training in Bahrain and the Bahraini doctors in Pakistan. It would help them understand the hospitals of both countries,” he added.
