Waste treatment project on the anvil
Manama : The Kingdom will have a future-oriented solid waste management plant soon, if the discussion between the Ministry of Works and a prominent Malaysian company bear fruit. The project, estimated at a cost of BD300 million, will treat the day-to-day solid waste generated. “It’s an eco-friendly plant, incorporating state-of-the-art technology to convert everyday waste to useful products as well as to produce electricity,” Malaysian Ambassador Ahmad Shahizan Abd Samad told DT News.
“The project will also include desalination to serve the water requirement in an effective way, using the energy generated from the waste treatment plant. Thus, the new plant will be a self-sustaining unit,” he added.
The waste treatment will take into account the need of the Kingdom for more land and will follow a plan of gradual landfill over 100 years. The Malaysian company had earlier built a similar plant for Qatar Government three years ago.
“The Bahrain project will have participation from international investors, Malaysian Banks and Islamic Development Bank. Technology is expected to be sourced from Germany, Singapore and Brazil. The project will create many jobs,” he added.
