Defamation: Ex-colonel’s conviction overturned

Manamaformer colonel in the Intelligence has had his conviction in a defamation case overturned. He was earlier sentenced to one month behind bars in this case for speaking ill of a fellow countryman, but the High Criminal Appeals Court dropped the charges against him, as the victim’s lawyer didn’t have the necessary power of attorney to file such a lawsuit.

The ex-colonel is being tried in a set of cases for his involvement in fraud and possessing arms incidents. According to the case documents, the defendant spoke ill of his victim during a public gathering, stating that he was an idiot and a liar, who was facing rough time.

He also uploaded and spread a video footage of the event on social networks, court files stated.

The victim revealed to prosecutors that his relationship with the defendant began when he sold to him three land plots.

The lawsuit was filed by the victim’s lawyer, who used a general power attorney to complete the formalities. However, this kind of cases require a specific power of attorney to file a lawsuit.
