Terminate work permits of aged expats

Manamagroup of five MPs have recently demanded the government to sack expats, who attained the age barrier of 50 years. The MPs said the proposal comes to “enhance the efficiency and performance of expatriate workers in Bahrain and to curb their negative effects.”

This was mentioned in a proposal submitted by MP Jalal Kadhem Al Mahfoudh and was supported by four more MPs- Ghazi Al Rahma, Dr. Majeed Al Asfoor, Khalid Al Shaer and Majid Al Majid.

The proposal stipulates amending some of the articles of Law 19 of 2006 with regard to the regulation of labour market.

The amendments include making it mandatory for expatriates in Bahrain to be under the age of 50, to be in good health condition and not to be suffering from any infectious diseases.

In their proposal, the MPs called for the termination of work permits and deportation of expats exceeding the age of 50. They pointed to the financial burdens borne by accommodating elderly expatriates.
Meanwhile, they insisted that expats suffering from infectious diseases sacked immediately and deported, even if their work permits have not expired.

The proposal was submitted recently to the office of the Council of Representatives’ Speaker Ahmed Al Mulla, who will refer it to the concerned parliamentary committee for studying before discussing it openly before the 40-membered council.
