Two jailed for life for smuggling drugs into Bahrain

Manama : Two suspects accused of smuggling large quantity of heroin into Bahrain was given life sentences.

One of the defendants’ wife was also tried in connection with the same case, and was given six months behind bars for substance abuse.

The trio allegedly smuggled drugs with the help of a man living in Pakistan.

The latter, according to court files, used to send autos spare parts to the defendants, and the drugs were hidden inside them.

The husband of the female suspect admitted to taking drugs during interrogation, but denied promoting them.

He said that he noticed that his first co-defendant possessed a huge quantity of drugs in his apartment, all of which were received them from the Pakistani man through global shipping companies.

Moreover, his wife also told prosecutors that she did use drugs, but never sold them to anybody. She claimed that she became a drug addict after watching her husband’s addiction to heroin.

She said that she wanted her husband to stop taking drugs, as ‘their apartment was filled of heroin’.

“He wanted to quit taking drugs, but he couldn’t. He would suffer body pain at night if he wouldn’t take them. I started to take heroin myself and I told him so, so that he learns the consequences of his acts,” the woman told prosecutors.

Earlier, detectives reportedly failed to find anything while raiding their apartment. But the woman later informed them where the heroin was hidden.

The two men were also fined BD5000 each for their crimes, while the woman was fined BD1000.
