Bahrain has eighth highest rate of diabetes

Manama : Bahrain has the eighth highest rate of diabetes, according to the latest statistics conducted in 2015. The Kingdom is also ranked third among GCC countries after Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, pointing out that genetics and lifestyle have a big role in the occurrence of this disease that affects all parts of the body including the eyes.

Salmaniya Medical Complex’ Eye Consultant Surgeon Dr. Mohammed Naeem Nasser explained that diabetes damages the retina progressively, pointing out that a patient may be suffering from impairment of the retina without their knowledge.

Upon preliminary results, 25 per cent of diabetic patients get referred to eye clinics to examine impairment of the retina caused by diabetes, according to a research conducted by Dr Nasser. The research on the occurrence of diabetes and its impact on the retina also showed that 30pc of patients in the advanced stage do not know about any signs of impairment.

Abnormal blood vessels can grow on the surface of the retina, therefore diabetic patients must follow up with an eye doctor on a regular basis to ensure the safety of their retina, and a laser treatment for retinopathy is available at SMC to prevent any development of abnormalities when diagnosed in time, he added.

The study also found that there is an increase in yellow spot disease in the eyes because of lack in discipline of blood sugar, leading to low visibility, which requires laser treatment to stop the progression of fluid leakage and fat from blood vessels, in addition to eye acupuncture treatment to help fat and fluid absorption.

“The study also found that the diabetic patients who have higher percentage of blood sugar are less responsive to injection treatments than patients who are keeping their blood sugar in check,” he added.

Dr. Nasser urged diabetic patients to follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly to prevent retinopathy, besides regularly visiting eye doctors to check on any abnormalities.
