First win for Al Maarifa

Manama : Al Maarifa got off to a winning start to their campaign in the Third School Mini Olympics yesterday in the girls football championship, which got underway at Riffa Club grounds in Hunainiya, following resounding victories over the AMA (5-0) and Al Noor International School (3-0).

Other matches in this seven-team single round robin competition saw Al Noor ease past the Indian School 7-0, Al Hekma and New Millennium drew goalless, while the Indian School and New Millennium scored identical 1-0 victories over AMA and Omayma.

Second day action at the Mini Olympics also featured three other competitions – volleyball, 3-on-3 basketball and table tennis.

In the secondary stage boys volleyball championship, Muharraq and Al Jabriya will clash tomorrow in the final after respective wins over the Indian Club 2-0 (25-12, 25-16) and Al Noor 2-0 (25-15, 25-12) at the Bahrain Volleyball Association courts in Riffa.

In the 3-on-3 basketball, the secondary girls championship got underway with New Millennium ‘1’ winning their both matches against Khawla (8-3) and the Indian School ‘2’ (3-0) to top group ‘B’.

Meanwhile, in Group ‘C’ Al Noor International School is dominating after beating New Millennium ‘2’ (10-0) and Al Hidd ‘1’ (5-3).

In the boys secondary stage, AMA ‘2’ recorded two wins over Al Wisam ‘3’ (8-3) and New Millennium ‘1’ (12-9) in Group ‘A’.

Al Wisam ‘2’ continued to lead Group ‘B’ thanks to victories over Indian School ‘2’ (3-2) and Al Noor (7-3), while Group ‘C’ is being topped by AMA ‘3’ after respective wins over Al Wisam ‘1’ (17-3) and Indian School ‘4’ (12-4).

The preliminary round of the table tennis championships were also staged yesterday, with the finals scheduled to take place today.

Mini Olympics action continues today with the group stage matches in the secondary boys and girls basketball championships as well as the girls football and boys intermediate table tennis and the secondary boys and girls volleyball semi-finals. 

Nine sports events are being competed for including three team sports– football, basketball and volleyball. The remaining sports are athletics, aquathlon, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and athletics for disabilities.
