Salmaniya Medical Complex focuses on diabetes

Manama : Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) concentrates mostly on services for diabetes patients, due to its recent alarming increase in the Kingdom, said the first head specialist of Orthopedic centre at SMC, Mohammed Jawad.

He said a number of people suffer from blood-related problems such as diabetes or clogged arteries, and in turn ulcers or gangrene on the foot. The centre specializes in these areas and provides those with gangrene, diabetic shoes to protect them from any cuts that may lead to amputation, he said.

“In the event of amputation, we provide appropriate artificial prosthetics, besides a rehabilitation exercise for them to feel normal with it,” he said.

Jawad added that the centre also offers services to patients with flatfoot, heel pain, or any other foot-related problems, for both children and adults, and tries best to avoid surgeries.

Jawad explained that children suffering from congenital birth defects, deformities at the time of birth, cerebral palsy or other disabilities benefit from these services.

Jawad said, “We provide them with appropriate devices that help them correct their disability, while simultaneously preparing them for the future. Early intervention contributes to changing their lives.”
