A senior security official yesterday thanked the worshippers for their cooperation with the policemen, who were deployed in the vicinity of the mosques in different parts of the kingdom during Friday prayers (midday).

For the second consecutive week, security was beefed up near the mosques during the prayer time, as fears grew among worshippers of possible terrorist attacks on worship places.

Public Security Chief Major General Tariq Al Hassan through his official Twitter page expressed his appreciation to the worshippers for cooperating with the police and following their instructions.

“My utmost gratitude and appreciation goes to the members of Bahrain police. I’m so proud of them, as they prove that they’re fit for the responsibility entrusted to them to preserve the peace and security of the people of Bahrain,” Al Hassan tweeted.

This came as rumours about a suspected terrorist attack on mosques during Friday sermons and prayers made rounds among worshippers. Recently, two different bomb blasts by the Islamic State (IS) in the mosques in Saudi Arabia claimed the lives of over 25 people.

Meanwhile, social media networks were rife with the news about a possible attack on a mosque in the capital, despite Interior Ministry’s denial.

People in certain areas such as Ras Ruman set up check points at the entrances of their main mosques, an act that was later condemned by the Ministry.

On Thursday, commenting on the public reaction, Al Hassan clarified: “Law enforcement and capturing of criminals are the roles of the police. They are trained to protect the public and their property as outlined in the criminal procedure law, which grants them the power of arrest and to conduct field investigations.”

“Public security forces have taken precautionary measures. They have designed deployment plans as well as initiating control and surveillance points in sensitive locations. Citizens can be the most effective and responsible by cooperating with the police,” the Public Security Chief added.
