Jaw Prison riot: Closing arguments on June 13

Manama : Closing arguments will be heard on June 13 in the trial of 54 appellants implicated of vandalising a local prison.

The accused were earlier hit with 15 years each behind bars.

Fifty-seven men were found guilty in connection with this case, but only 54 appealed against the verdict.

The Bahrainis accused allegedly took part in riots that broke out in Jaw Prison in March last year.

The High Criminal Court earlier ordered them to pay a combined total of around BD0.5 million for the damage they caused to the property.

The defendants reportedly destroyed numerous facilities, ignited fire in the property as well as committed hooligan acts.

Several prison guards and inmates were injured in the attack, according to court files.

The rioting inmates allegedly went on a rampage on March 10, and even held a nurse hostage.

Violence erupted when the guards denied access to a prisoner’s relative, who showed up for a visit without any proof of identification, court files stated.
