Bahrain’s Dutch community celebrates Oranjefeest

Manama : More than 400 members of the Dutch community in Bahrain and other guests, many dressed in Orange attended their annual Oranjefeest (Orange Party) to celebrate  the birthday of Netherlands King Willem-Alexander of the House of Orange-Nassau on Friday at Cafe Amsterdam in Adliya.

The event featured the best of Dutch culture, which included traditional food and beverages besides music from a live band and Dutch DJ Larush.

King Willem-Alexander, the 49-year old monarch, was born on 27 April 1967 and his birthdate is known as King’s Day in the Netherlands and its realms such as Aruba, Curacao and Sint Maarten in the Caribbean.

When the King ascended the throne on 30 April 2013, following the abdication of his mother Queen Beatrix (1980-2013), he became the first male monarch of the Netherlands since King William III died in 1890, who was then succeeded by his daughter Queen Wilhelmina (1890-1948) followed by Queen Juliana 1948-80).
