Designer hired for $1bn Bahrain Airport interiors

Manama : International design practice, Benoy, has been appointed to the Bahrain International Airport’s new terminal development.

Benoy, as sub-consultant to Hill International Middle East, will carry out interior design activities for the new passenger terminal building, which is being developed as part of the Bahrain Airport Modernization Program.

Earlier this year, a joint venture between Arabtec and TAV was picked as main contractor through a $1.1bn (BD414.1m) contract, which includes the construction of a new terminal building, a main services building, and an aircraft bay.

The concept design for the terminal building's interiors has drawn on the natural assets and culture of Bahrain, Benoy said in a statement.

Geometric motifs and traditional crafts such as basket weaving have also been subtly referenced through fractal patterns and installations.

The landscape of the Kingdom has influenced the colour palette and form of the interiors.

The Departure and Arrival journeys have been framed by grand portals and entrances which accentuate the transition between different functions of the terminal route, from check-in to immigration, for example.

Remarking on Benoy's participation in the project, head of the practice's MENA Studios, Paul Priest, said: "Benoy is honoured to be working with Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications and the Bahrain Airport Company on their vision for the future of the country.

"By applying our knowledge of the region with our expertise across Aviation, Hospitality and Retail, we have helped to shape this terminal into a boutique experience for guests travelling to and from the Kingdom."
