Jail terms for attempts to kill policemen

Manama: The Fifth High Criminal Court today sentenced three defendants to life in prison and six others to ten years in jail on charges of the attempted murder of policemen, possession and detonation of explosives, participation in illegal rallies and riots, and possession of Molotov bombs, Chief of Terror Crime Prosecution Advocate General Ahmed Al Hammadi stated.

On March 22, 2014, the defendants, taking part in a rally with around 80 other individuals, hurled firebombs, iron rods and stones at a police force. One bomb injured a police officer who was transported to hospital for treatment.

The Public Prosecution based its investigations on testimonies, the defendants' confessions and forensic evidences. All defendants were referred to the Fifth High Criminal Court that reviewed the case in the presence of their lawyers.

The defendants have the right to challenge the rulings before the Court of Appeal in accordance with the deadlines prescribed by the law if there is a legal ground to support their appeal.

Under the Bahraini judicial system, defendants have the right to challenge the verdict issued by the Court of Appeal before the Court of Cassation.
