Bahrainis jailed for cops murder attempt

Manama : The High Criminal Court yesterday slapped nine defendants with heavy jail terms on grounds of their involvement in an attempt to murder police officers and detonating a bomb. 

The Bahrainis were also accused of possessing explosives, participating in an illegal gathering and riot as well as having firebombs. 

Three of them were hit with life sentence each, while the rest were handed down 10 years behind bars each. The defendants, according to court files, were among 80 people, who attacked police officers with firebombs, iron rods and stones near Sitra Post Office on March 22, 2014. 

While police officers dealing with the culprits, an explosive went off, causing injuries to a policeman. 

Police investigations unearthed the involvement of the six defendants in the incident, and the third defendant confirmed during interrogations that they were part of the mob. 

The accusations against the defendants were established based on witnesses’ confessions, and their confessions as well as technical and medical reports.
