Bahrain vehicle inspector jailed for bribery

Manama : A vehicle inspection officer in the General Traffic Directorate, who is accused of accepting bribes in exchange of passing over vehicles’ technical defects, was sentenced to five years in prison.

Six other men involved in the same case were also given jail sentences, but they got only three years imprisonment each.

The officer is said to have accepted bribes between BD100 and BD120 to pass defective vehicles that were prepared to enter car races.

The second defendant told prosecutors that he brought to the defendant between 15 to 20 vehicles and he paid him amounts ranging between BD50 and BD100 apiece.

“I was giving him (the inspection officer) the vehicles in a car parking near the General Traffic Directorate’s premises,” the second defendant said.
