Bahrain jails stateless man for defaming sister country
Manama : A court has upheld the sentence of a stateless man convicted of defaming a sister country and inciting the public against the regime.
Earlier, the Lower Criminal Court had sentenced him to two years behind the bars.
The defendant was arrested after a Twitter user appeared to be posting defamatory remarks on the social networking site.
It was later revealed that the accused was handling the account, but during the interrogation he denied having any involvement with it.
During a raid, the police had recovered a detonator and several mobile phones from his residence.
The defendant was also fined BD2,100 for his crimes as he was found guilty of misusing telecommunication devices besides inciting the public against the regime as well as insulting a sister country online.
The defendant had been living in Bahrain illegally.
