Awarding of second enabling works package announced

Manama

Construction of a new Fire Station and Super Gate at the Bahrain International Airport Passenger Terminal Building will start soon as the second Enabling Works Package worth BD10 million has been awarded to G.P. Zachariades Engineering and Construction Company.

The Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed informed the decision yesterday in a press release

Zachariades was selected out of twelve bidders owing to its most competitive proposal in terms of budget, timelines and overall implementation. The first Enabling Works Package was signed last February.

Along with the fire station associated support infrastructure will also be built at the place of the existing building after its demolition. Super gate will be a new access security gate at the end of the airfield equipped with the latest technology and equipment that will be the main airside access point for airport staff working on the airfield.

It also includes the re-provision of aviation fueling facilities for Bahrain Aviation Fueling Company including offices, maintenance workshops and operational equipment in three key areas to enable continuity in efficient and safe refueling of aircraft.

The second phase of the Enabling Works will commence in July and is expected to complete by May 2016.

Both the Enabling Works Packages include the relocation of all existing utilities and facilities away from the footprint of the passenger terminal to facilitate construction on the new 206,000 square meter BIA Passenger Terminal Building.

The ministry anticipates the awarding of 7 additional contracts worth over BD300m by the end of the year.
