2015 Olympic Day a ‘big success’

Bahrain celebrated the 2015 Olympic Day on Friday with more than 1,500 participants flocking to the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir for a packed programme marking the occasion.

The day-long event, organised by the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC), is celebrated worldwide on June 23, but brought forward as it clashes with the Holy Month of Ramadan.

His Majesty the Kingdom’s representative for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman and BOC president HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the event patron, delegated Supreme Council general secretary and BOC vice-president Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa to attend the activities.

Shaikh Salman, along with BOC General Secretary Abdulrahman Askar and other high ranking sports officials from the BOC and sports clubs and federations, toured the venue where a variety of activities took place.

“Olympic Day is a celebration for youth around the world to observe the Olympic values of Fair Play, Perseverance, Respect and Sportsmanship,” said Askar as he announced the start of the activities.

“We are here to celebrate the three pillars of the International Olympic Committee: Move, Learn and Discover. We also seek to share the international Olympic community its efforts in promoting the principles of Olympism and the noble human values, where this ceremonial occasion has occupies an important part in our annual agenda”.

Activities were conducted by four sports federations - gymnastics, martial arts, maritime sports and disabled sports and others included face colouring, pottery colouring, photo corner, children’s competitions and games. Highlights of the day were the running races with more than 300 athletes in the fray and organised in coordination with the Bahrain Road Runners.

Four races of different age categories for both juniors and adults were held.

A lecture on sport nutrition, was also conducted by Mohammed Saad, followed by another on sports injuries by Ahmed Al Anzoor, Askar honored the winners of the races, and thanked McDonalds, Jawad, Trafco Group and Palace Projects for supporting this year’s Olympic Day, and all those who spared no efforts in making this event an all-round success.
