Bahrainis jailed in arson case

Manama : The High Criminal Court has slapped six Bahraini defendants involved in an arson attack with 10 years behind bars each, while a seventh man received only three years, as his age is under 18.

The defendants have been implicated with setting an armoured car on fire. Aged between 17 and 25, the Bahrainis were tried in relation to an arson attack against police officers in East Eker village, where a mob of protesters used firebombs against police officers, who responded with tear gas canisters to disperse them.

A Ministry of Interior-owned armoured vehicle caught fire during the assault, but police officers who were inside it escaped unharmed.

A police officer, who was in the scene, took the stand during the defendants’ trial, stating that he saw 20 men during the event. But police investigations brought out the involvement of the seven suspects, who are also ordered to collectively pay BD3,709 for the damage they caused to the vehicle.
