A divine job and selfless care with compassion

Manama : A close look into their profession will reveal that nurses are the epitomes of patience, compassion and dedication. As another World Nurses Day dawns today, it’s time to recall the tireless work of nurses all around the world.

Patricia Menezes, a retired nurse with more than 40 years of experience, said that she had enjoyed her job; especially the interaction with patients and efforts to alleviate their pangs.

Patricia Menezes chose this profession by following the footsteps of her elder sister, who was also a nurse.  Hailing from Mangalore, India, she finds the profession as a challenging one. “But it’s worth to feel that, at the end of the day you helped somebody.”

This year, the theme of World Nurses Day is “Nurses: A Force for Change: Improving health systems’ resilience.”

A nurse’s job is nerve-racking as they deal with patients and doctors, who are in the middle of very stressful situations, but they have to help them get through it and provide excellent care.

According to Patricia, those who chose to be a nurse have to be generous and empathetic. “They must have the ability of problem solving, and should possess critical thinking skills.  Above, all they should know how to treat people and care them as their own.  Patience is the key to the success of a nurse,” she explained.

She has worked in different shifts with lots of friendly and generous people.  “We were like a family, we had our good moments and bad moments but we usually get along, and worked as team.”

To those who aspire to become a nurse, Patricia said: “According to me, nursing is a divine profession. Those who want to become a nurse, should try spending time inside a hospital, whether as volunteer or as any other role. This will help them realise whether they are comfortable with the hospital environment and serving people.”

“This kind of job is not just about money, you have to truly care about other people. If you don’t truly care and want to help people, then you will never be a happy nurse,” she added.
