Bahrain jails three for torching cars

Manama  : The High Criminal Appeals Court has upheld the 10-year prison sentence issued against a defendant implicated in burning the two luxury vehicles belonging to ex-MP Ali Al Durazi.

Three men, including the appellant, were tried in connection with this case, and the other two men received equal punishment.

The incident occurred in 2014 during the parliamentary elections when Al Durazi decided to run for a second term in the parliament after he was elected unopposed in 2011.

The trio are said to have jumped over the fence of the ex-MP’s house and poured petrol on the cars and set them on fire before fleeing.

The blaze caused damage to the house also. The Bahrainis told prosecutors that they wanted to terrify Al Durazi so as to make him abstain from the elections.

The court has also ordered them to pay a combined total of BD51,980 in compensation for the damage caused to the vehicles and the house.
