'Why is death penalty not enforced in Bahrain?'

Manama : Following an entire month of postponement, a senior government official will explain to MPs why death penalties have not been enforced in Bahrain during the past five years.

Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa is expected to be present during the next weekly Parliament meeting on Tuesday, to reply to the queries of MP Jamal Buhassan on not enforcing death penalties in Bahrain since 2011.

Buhassan earlier told DT News that over five people have been sentenced to death by Bahraini courts in the past five years, claiming that none of them were referred to HM the King for ratification.

He blamed the increasing terrorist acts in the country on the absence of deterrent punishments.

He even accused the minister of evading the questions, after the latter requested to be excused from attending parliament sessions on more than one occasion.

According to Buhassan, his opinion gained support from fellow legislators and citizens, as calls for enforcing Qisas against cop killers and terrorists have increased. (Qisas in Islamic Penal Law is taking the life of killers).
