New shops to block Hamad Town central market entries

Manama : The three main entrances to the central market in Hamad Town will soon be blocked as shops are being built there. This is set to cause huge inconvenience to customers and losses to the shopkeepers.

Construction works of two shops have already started at two of the entrances of the Souq, and according to sources, a third one is expected to come up at the third entrance.

“This is one of the most prominent traditional markets in Bahrain. To build shops at the entrance is not a good idea,” said one of the merchants, Ram Chandran, adding that losing customers due to this is a major concern.

“There are 40 workers here and we do not think our businesses will survive something like this,” he added.

“Most of the customers who come here, park their cars at the entrance, and from there tell us what they want. We then get the items for them. This will no longer be possible if the shops come,” said Ali, another trader.

Mohammed, a customer at the Souq, said he is surprised by the decision to build the shops. “It is an odd place to build shops. It will be inconvenient for us as the entrance will be blocked,” he said.
